History of UDS
Founder: Dr John M Maitland
Dr. John Maitland had worked in Uganda (click here for more on UDS UGANDA) as a Medical Superintendent at Ngora Hospital in Kumi district from 1963 to 1976. In 1980 he and Mr. Neil Stedman founded a charity that is now Teso Development Trust, an organisation that Dr. Maitland chaired. This gave him an opportunity to visit Uganda several times every year and, working with Mr. Wakumire, to discuss the UDS concept with officials of local and central government, Churches and other NGOs.
Charity registration:
UDS was first registered as a UK charity in 1994 and, in 1997, as an NGO in Uganda. With the help of Steven Ogwang in Uganda, UDS started as a small NGO with a small office and shop facility at Wandegeya in 1996. It later acquired offices at Kamwokya, Mawanda Road and today it consists of an office in Kampala and a district development branch in Kamuli.

Milestones:
.................................................................
1997: Uganda Advisory Council set up.
.................................................................
1998: UDS commissioned a study to help it understand the business environment and to enable them to design appropriate programmes tailored to meet people’s needs. The seven districts were studied, revealing a gap and the need for UDS intervention in setting up District Development Support Centres (Now called Multipurpose Community Telecentre). The Advisory Council decided to focus on Kamuli and Mubende Districts because of poverty levels, eagerness to work with UDS and appreciation of the need for Information as a developmental intervention.

1999: National Lotteries Charity Board funding obtained, allowing for the appointment of the first full time UDS Programme Manager. Planning workshops were held in Mubende and Kamuli districts with the participation of the all intended stakeholders. These workshops also ensured their involvement in identifying their problems and designing and planning the project.
.................................................................
2000: The first UDS Centre was opened in Kamuli. (Lack of funding has prevented working in Mubende District.)
.................................................................
2006: The Advisory Council becomes the Board of Trustees of an autonomous Ugandan NGO.
